Frequently Asked Questions

How is manufactured stone veneer different from natural stone?

Manufactured stone provides the look of natural stone at a lower installed cost. It is lighter in weight and does not typically require structural footings or mechanical anchors.

What areas should I avoid installing stone?

Adhered stone veneer is designed for use as a vertical wall covering only. Installation in horizontal applications should occur only as part of a properly engineered system. It must not be used as paving or as a wall cap.

Avoid installing adhered stone veneer in areas subject to continuous or frequent water exposure, such as around pools or hot tubs. It is also not suitable for stair risers where deicing chemicals or snow removal tools could damage the surface.

What are the benefits of using manufactured stone?

Manufactured stone delivers the authentic look of natural stone at a significantly lower installed cost. Because it is made from lightweight materials, it is considered an adhered veneer and does not require a foundation or mechanical support for installation.

Do I need to seal the stone veneer after installation?

Using a sealer or coating that does not allow the wall to “breathe” can compromise the long-term integrity of the wall system. Any moisture that accumulates within the assembly must be able to escape through the surface covering.

A silane or siloxane water repellent may be applied to reduce water absorption while preserving the stone veneer’s color, texture, and vapor permeability. For health and safety reasons, choose a water-based rather than solvent-based silane or siloxane product.

Can manufactured stone veneer be installed on fireplaces?

Yes. It can be installed on interior and exterior fireplaces when proper clearances and installation guidelines are followed.
